The RØDE VideoMic is a professional grade 1/2" condenser shotgun microphone designed for use with consumer video cameras and personal audio recorders.
The integrated Rycote® Lyre® based shock mounting system isolates the VideoMic capsule and electronics from its all-metal shoe mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre® provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap.
Its standard sized shoe mount also includes a 3/8" thread in the base for easy mounting on a boom pole or stand.
By employing a super-cardioid polar pattern the VideoMic becomes highly directional, focusing on the subject in front of the camera, and minimising any surrounding sounds.
In addition to the microphone's native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded.
A -10dB and -20dB level attenuation (or PAD), selectable from inside the battery compartment, allows recording of loud sound sources, such as live music or motorsport.
The RØDE VideoMic directional on-camera microphone is designed in Australia and covered by RØDE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.

The sound is much, much better with the VideoMic than with the standard microphone… There’s less environmental sound when recording voice; less reverb from the ‘room’, and less background noise. The voice itself is clear and crisp without being sibilant.
I shot all of the material hand-held, positively inviting handling noise. But there wasn’t any. Even when deliberately waving the camera around the Lyre suspension did its job. Compare this to using the camera mic, which picks up any contact with the camera body or lens.
News journalists with a VideoMic-equipped DSLR would be able to capture broadcast quality footage with high quality audio to match. In a tight squeeze (like a press scrum) it could be a killer combination.
The RØDE VideoMic (With Rycote onboard) raises the bar on DSLR sound and throws down the gauntlet to other manufacturers.
If you're looking into low cost shotguns, or simply have realized that your on-camera mic isn't cutting it and you don't want to drop a lot of cash on a super-specialized mic, the RØDE VideoMic deserves a second and third look.
The quality of the audio itself is the best attribute of the mic. It sounds rich and full...This mic is not skimpy on audio quality... Easy to use, great sounding and an affordable microphone that takes care of the audio needs of novices and pros alike.
The VideoMic is fantastic, we often supply broadcast news with incident footage. Our sound is always better than theirs!
I would just like to say the RØDE VideoMic is one of the best I’ve ever used in this price range it out does mikes hundreds of dollars dearer. The sound is real and enchanting especially when recording nature docos. I’ve purchased a second init to use with my Mini Disc to record natural bush sound affects and the results are stunning. The sounds I’ve produced have more than paid for the microphone a few times over!
I can't tell you how many semi-pro videos I've seen shot where the location audio is terrible. Many amateur filmmakers will go to great lengths to get amazing shots, as they should, and then the whole illusion is shattered by audio recorded in the little front mounted mics on the camera, usually the weaklest link in a consumer camcorder that falls somewhere under "Special effects." When I got the RØDE VideoMic, it was extremely simple to integrate with its 1/8" plug.
The sound is very accurate, very "dead," if you will, and handles spoken word very well, both indoor and outdoor. While it won't take the place of your vocal mic in post, it will save you on location for its accuracy and quality.
Another great gem from RØDE.
If you're shooting with any smaller camera that lacks XLR inputs, but has 1/8" mic in, this is the mic for you. Purchased for use with a Canon T2i, I have found the VideoMic to be invaluable. The camera's pinhole mic is all but useless, and this gives me camera reference audio I can trust.
The rubber shock bands are available to order as a pack through your local distributor. Please use our technical support page to find your nearest distributor.
We recommend an Alkaline or Lithium battery for the best possible battery life. All RØDE specifications have been carried out using this type of battery. If you use a slightly lower power battery, the mic will work but may not meet our published specifcation.
The RØDE cold shoe adaptor is a standard size adaptor, also known as a universal shoe mount. This standard shoe is suitable for the majority of camera attachments.
If your camera has a different, or custom adaptor, please contact your camera manufacturer for information on converters to fit the universal shoe connection.
Yes, all of our microphones in the VideoMic range have a standard 3/8 thread built into the bottom of the cold shoe mount for connection to a boompole, mic stand or tripod.
This is usually caused by the function of "Automatic Gain Control" or "AGC" on the camera.
Basically, when the camera cannot sense an audio input signal it automatically increases the gain of the input. It is increased so much that the noise floor in the camera microphone amplifier becomes audible .
The AGC can be disabled on some cameras and it is worth checking with you camera manufacturer for information on this, which can sometimes require a firmware update to the camera.
RØDE have created the VideoMic Pro to help combat this issue, the VideoMic Pro contains a 20dB pre amplifier, boosting the mic signal so that the camera will see a good signal level and not engage its AGC.
We recommend setting your audio levels manually to achieve an optimum signal to noise ratio and disabling the AGC of the camera.
